MAMA’S JOURNEY
"Mama’s Journey" is a song for Mom. Her name is Cheryl. In the spring of 2019, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Her oncologist said that it was: «Aggressive, high-risk, but curable». So we, the family, held on to that word: «curable».
In the summer of 2019, Mom was in bed as she was not feeling too well. I thought she'd enjoy some guitar playing, where I repeatedly strummed the riff that would inspire this song. She asked me if this was a new song, and I told her that it might be. And that is how "Mama’s Journey" came about.
Mom did five months of chemo from June to October 2019. During that time, she was given three different chemo cocktails. One of them was nicknamed the «red devil», and as Mom will attest to this, it lives up to its name.
Following surgery and five weeks of radiation, five days a week, from the end of January 2020 to the beginning of March 2020, her cancer was in full remission, Thank God!
She was treated at the Cancer Clinic at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. She found the chemo nurses, who are lauded in the song, to be absolutely wonderful. The song =universally dedicated to the Doctors, Nurses, Friends and Family that helped Mom beat cancer, and to anyone and everyone dealing with a similar battle.
Proceeds from the song will go to help the RUH Cancer Clinic.
